Maiz or corn was first domesticated in southern Mexico more than 10,000 years ago. As a world staple food, it surpasses wheat & rice as the most commonly consumed grain. Throughout the Americas, you will find corn as a common street food. The word comes from the Taino word for the plant, mahiz.
